Implement LLRC recommendations, devolution:Sumanthiran

Tamil National Alliance Parliamentarian M.A.Sumanthiran has urged the government to implement the recommendations of the LLRC and devolution of power for good governance.

Parliamentarian Sumanthiran was speaking at a seminar on ‘LLRC Recommendations and the Future of Our Motherland’.  Director of Centre for Alternatives Dr.Pkkiyasothy Saravanamuthu, President of United Socialist Front Sritunga Jayasuriya and Dr. Nimilka Fernando also addressed the seminar.

Sumanthiran continued that as far back as 1930, SWRD Bandaranaike testifying before Upcountry Commission pleaded for the introduction of Federalism for the country. He foresaw that it could be the ideal constitutional frame work for a multi- lingual, national country. Had the country given an ear to his pleadings then, this island would not have been in such a quandary now in diverse fields.

He went on that the LLRC is a government creation. It promised to implement LLRC recommendations. It gave an assurance in Geneva. But the recommendations have not seen the light of day. Government promised to make Sinhala and Tamil translation of the LLRC recommendations available to the public. That has not been done. Even in English, we have only extracts. It is unfortunate that the problems of the Tamil people are not carried in the Sinhala media in the right perspective. It is detrimental essentially for the country at large.
