Court turns down request for ban on Rally for SF’s Release

Colombo Chief Magiatrate Rashmi Singhapuli refused a request to impose a ban on the Rally for SF’s Release due to be held yesterday.

The application for a ban was made by the Kesselwatte Police. The application stated that it could cause disturbance and lead to a breakdown of peace.

Court in its order stressed that a peaceful protest was a democratic right and that if the protest leads to mischief or violation of the law, the police could use minimum force to contain the situation.
