Maldivian President Nasheed resigns

Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed has announced his resignation. Announcing his resignation over the Television, he observed; “ I am resigning from the Presidency. It is better for the country in this current situation to do so. I do not want to run the country with an iron fist.”

His resignation comes in the wake of protests and demonstrations by the supporters of the former President Mahmoon Abdul Gayoon. The police have refused to disperse the demonstrations. Earlier a criminal Court Judge was arrested leading to grave protests. The army has commenced patrolling the country, reports say. The dissension against Nasheed rule commenced with several monuments being put up during SARRC Summit held in Male, the capital city.

The protestors even vandalized some of the monuments charging that other religions were being brought in. There were even rumours that there was a coup by the former regime. But official reports denied. It maintained that it was the will of the people.
