Contempt proceedings; BASL seeks to be intervenient

BASL has filed papers in the Court of Appeal seeking permission to be intervenient applicant in the Contempt of Court proceedings against Minister Bathiudeen.

The petition filed by Attorney at Law Sanath Wijeyawardena pleads that on or about July16, 2012, a ‘B’ report had been filed in case No B396/ 2012, in the Mannar Magistrate’s Court, in which case the Magistrate A.Judeson had made an order. On July 17 and 18 the respondent Minsiter had telephoned and demanded the Magistrate to reverse the Order. The Magistrate had on July 19 made a complaint to Mannar police. The visit and communication with the Judicial Service Commission by the respondent Minister over the matter is a blatant interference with the due and proper working of judiciary and Court.

BASL President Wijedasa Rajaapkse, PC, Deputy President Anoma Goonetileke, Secretary Sanjaya Gamage, Treasurer Rasika Disssanayaka and Assistant Treasurer Charith Galhena are the petitioners.
