Political Tsunami in Maldives causes concern for international community

Since the crisis in Maldives has caused concern among the international community, India sent a special envoy K.Ganapathy, a Secretary of the External Affairs Ministry to talk to all stake holders. India has recognized the new government. US, which was the first to recognize the new government, sent Robert Blake, US assistant Secretary of State Robert O Blake to Male.
He held discussions with President Dr.Waheed and also the former President Nowsheed. The head of the UN political department Oscar Fernandez –Tranco was also in Male asm a special envoy to study the situation.
Blake underlined the need for all parties to exercise restrain, refrain from night demonstrations and to respect the constitution. Earlier, India had done the spade work for talks between the rivals. The speculation is that there can be a coalition.
Meanwhile the new President Waheed has told that the police will not execute the arrest warrant issued by a criminal court if there is no risk of Nawsheed not appearing before Court. Reports say that the violence has resulted in vandalism that damaged artifacts belonging ot other religions.
Maldives President Dr.Waheed has turned down a request by the ex President Nowsheed for the hlding of an election. Waheed dismissed it as being unpractical in the present environment of uncertainty and strif. There is no climate for free and fair election. |
