Minister of Internal Trade Johnston Fernando has warned that stern measures would be taken against errant traders who involve in unlawful acts to create scarcity and fetch huge profits during the new year season.
He made the warning after declaring open the Mahapola 265 Exhibition and carnival held in Katugatota recently. He went on that there are adequate food items. There is no scarcity.
Last year, the consumers complained of high prices for vegetables. This year, the vegetable cultivators are complaining that the prices have come down and that they face a loss. The government is trying to sort out the problem to the satisfaction of both the consumers and producers. The department will buy the vegetables at a reasonable rate and distribute to the market. Chief Minister of the Central Province Sarath Ekanayake also addressed.
