Democracy will be protected, preserved: President at UPFA rally

President Mahinda Rajapakse stated categorically that democracy will be protected and preserved in the country at any cost despite conspiracies. Any conspiracy to topple the government by force will be thwarted. The right of the people to change governments through their exercise of universal franchise will be safeguarded.

President Rajapakse was addressing the mammoth May Day rally at Colombo Town Hall organized by the UPFA. He went on that Sri Lanka is one of the oldest countries in the Asian region to practice democracy. The country will continue to so. It is the government’s efforts that have enabled the UNP and others from the South to hold a May Day rally in Jaffna. That is symbolic of government’s success. The well being of the working people is our commitment. No forces will be allowed to derail the efforts of the government to rebuild the country. Imperialist forces want to exploit the national assets. Sri Lanka is no more a colony.

SLFP procession commenced from Campbell Park, NFA from Aurveda junction at Borella and the MEP from Abayarama Temple in Narahenpita and joined the main rally at TownHall.
