Sampanthan turns 79

Veteran Tamil leader currently holding the posts of leader of the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) and Ilankai Thamil Arasu Katchchi (ITAK) turned 79 on Sunday (05.02.2012).
He visited Sri Pathirakali Ambal Kovil in his hme town Trincomalee in the morning and offered pooja and worshipped. Later he attended the second day workshop held at Trincomalee Town Hall for the heads of ITAK controlled local authorities in the North and East on leadership and good governance.
When he entered the hall, he was welcomed by the heads of local authorities. They wished him a long and prosperous life. Several heads of local authorities honored him by offering golden shawls.
Born on 05.02.1933 Sampanthan is a lawyer by profession. Leaving a lucrative practice in law and engaging in full time politics for the cause of the Tamil people, he joined the ITAK at the invitation of late S.J.V.Chelvanayakam and contested the Trincomalee electorate in 1977 and entered parliament.
Currently Mr.Sampanthan plays a pivotal role in talks between the TNA and the government led by President Mahinda Rajapakse to find a political solution to the six decade old ethnic problem with the backing of the international community.
